It’s no secret that I grew up eating cabbage rolls, and I’ve eaten enough of them to know the difference between an excellent cabbage roll and a less-than-exceptional cabbage roll. My version of cabbage rolls is filled with a tasty beef and rice mixture, and the rolls are baked in a simple homemade tomato sauce, which yields fantastic results.

FOR THE CABBAGE ROLLS, YOU’LL NEED THE FOLLOWING INGREDIENTS:

Cabbage, I used a medium head.

Ground beef, preferably use 90% lean; You’ll need 1 Pound.

1 Cup.Of cooked rice.

1/2 Cup.Of onion finely chopped

1/4 Cup.Of fresh parsley leaves, chopped.

1 Tsp.Of garlic minced

1 Tsp.Of salt.

1/2 Tsp.Of black pepper.

An egg.

Cooking spray.

USING THE INGREDIENTS BELOW; YOU’LL MAKE THE BEST HOMEMADE TOMATO SAUCE, OR YOU CAN SIMPLY USE A STORE-BOUGHT ONE:

Canned crushed tomatoes, I used a 25-ounces can undrained.

Canned tomato sauce; I used a 15-ounces can.

1/2 Cup.Of finely chopped onion

2 Tbsp.Of butter

1 Tsp.Of garlic minced

Ground black pepper and salt.

2 Tbsp.Of brown sugar.

1 Tbsp.Of red wine vinegar.

FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW TO MAKE THE BEST STUFFED CABBAGE ROLLS:

1st Step

To begin, melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Cook for 4-5 minutes, or until the onion is transparent.

2nd Step

Secondly, cook for 30 seconds before adding the garlic. To the saucepan, add the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, salt, and pepper.

3rd Step

Then, combine the brown sugar and red wine vinegar in a separate bowl. Bring to low heat, and cook, stirring periodically, for around 10 to 15 minutes.

4th Step

Assemble the cabbage rolls while the sauce simmers. Increase the heat to high and bring a big saucepan of water to a boil. Boil the cabbage head in its head. Cook for 3–5 minutes, or until the cabbage leaves are tender. Remove 12 big cabbage leaves.

5th Step

In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, rice, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, 2 tbsp parsley, and egg. To the bowl, add 1/2 cup tomato sauce. Combine well.

6th Step

Arrange each cabbage leaf flat on a work surface. Cut a V-shaped notch in the thick section of the cabbage rib with a tiny knife.

7th Step

Form a log shape out of a third of a cup of the beef mixture and lay it in the middle of a cabbage leaf to serve, and the cabbage leaf should be wrapped around the meat mixture, and repeat the same process with the rest of the meat and cabbage.

8th Step

At this point, you need to preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. And using cooking spray, coat a 9″x13″ baking pan. Fill the bottom of the baking dish halfway with tomato sauce. In the dish, arrange the cabbage rolls seam side down. Finish with the last of the sauce.

9th Step

Wrap the dish with aluminum foil. Bake for 60-90 minutes, or until the cabbage is soft and the meat is cooked through, depending on your preference.

Last Step – Finally, top it all over with the remaining 2 tablespoons of parsley.
